How it works
The Activ8 Posture Method
What actually happens, from the first conversation to the last exercise.
The Activ8 Posture Method is a four-step cycle: a conversation about you and what you’re living with, an assessment of how your body is aligned and moving, a personalized sequence you practice at home, and re-testing so the sequence changes as you do. It isn’t something done to you. It’s worked out with you, from what your body is doing and what your life asks of it.

The idea underneath it
Your body compensates long before it complains
Your joints are built to sit in particular relationships to one another. When one drifts out of position, the rest don’t stop working — they adapt around it. That adaptation is silent, often for years.
Eventually something in the chain carries more load than it was designed for, and that is the part that starts to hurt. Which is why the painful spot is so often the last place worth treating.
The symptom is where the compensation ran out. The cause is usually somewhere quieter.
What that looks like in practice
Nancy’s right-side back pain started at her left hip
Nancy came to us with pain in her right lower back. Functional testing showed that her left hip flexors were underactive and weak.
To avoid loading that weak left side, her upper body had shifted to the right. The right side of her body had been absorbing the extra work ever since — and her right lower back was the first part to complain about it.
That back was never the cause. Treating it would have relieved the symptom for as long as the treatment lasted, and no longer. Correcting the left hip is what changed the loading.

The process
Four steps, in a cycle that keeps working for you
If you’ve had treatment before, you probably know the usual pattern: an appointment, a sheet of exercises, and a routine that fades once the pain does. Ours works more like learning an instrument. Each session builds on the last, the practice between sessions is where the progress happens, and what you’re working on evolves as you do. These four steps repeat every session, because your body and your life keep changing too.

01 The conversation
We start by listening. What hurts, yes, but also how you work, sleep, and move, what you’ve already tried, and what you want to get back to. Most people with recurring pain have been examined plenty. Far fewer have been asked. What you tell us shapes everything that follows.
02 The assessment
Posture photos from the front, sides, and back show where your body is sitting out of position, and you look at them with us. Movement tests then show which muscles have stopped doing their job and which have taken over. Together, they turn your story into an explanation of the pattern.
03 Your own sequence
A set of specific positions and exercises, in a deliberate order, built from the conversation and the assessment and fitted to the time and space you actually have. Simple, no special equipment, done at home.
04 Re-test, then adjust
Each session, we check in on how the sequence felt and what’s changed in your day, then re-photograph and re-test. Your sequence changes as your alignment changes. That’s what a generic routine can never do.

What to expect
What a session is actually like
You’ll be moving, not lying on a table, and talking the whole time. Your therapist walks you through positions, corrects you as you go, and asks how things feel. That feedback shapes the sequence; it isn’t small talk. Nothing is prescribed without an explanation of why. If something in the plan doesn’t fit your life, say so, and it changes.
Sessions run in person at our Boston, Newport and Los Angeles clinics, or over video from anywhere. Virtual works precisely because the work is yours to do: your therapist is watching, listening, correcting and adjusting either way.
Between sessions you do the sequence at home. Twenty to forty minutes is typical. This is where the progress happens, and over time it becomes part of how you live, not a program you finish. So we plan it around your real schedule, not an ideal one.

Being straight with you
Who this works for, and who it doesn’t
A good fit if
- Your pain keeps returning after treatment that targets the sore spot
- You’ve been told your imaging looks normal, but something still hurts
- You want to understand what your body is doing, not just have it handled
- You can give twenty to forty minutes most days to the sequence
- You’re looking for change that outlasts the appointment
Probably not, yet, if
- You have an acute injury or new symptoms that need a medical assessment first
- You’re after passive treatment — something done to you while you rest
- Daily work at home isn’t realistic for you right now
- You want symptomatic relief only, rather than addressing what is causing the symptoms
If you’re in the second column, we’ll tell you so on the consultation. That call is genuinely diagnostic for us as well as for you.
Where it comes from
Refined in the clinic, client by client
The Activ8 Posture Method draws on decades of work in muscle testing, muscle imbalance, and movement analysis, some of which is outlined in what posture therapy is. What makes it ours is how it’s been refined: since 2008, through years of assessments in our Boston, Newport, and Los Angeles clinics and online.
Just as much of it is about how we work with people. Our therapists are trained to listen first, to ask rather than assume, and to build the plan with you instead of handing it to you. Every therapist on the team works from the same method, so your experience follows the same logic whichever clinic you visit or whether you meet by video.
Reviews
What clients say
“Before Matt, I saw 3 different physical therapists, all of whom seemed very competent, but none could seem to make meaningful progress. The only reason I hesitated was because we live too far and I reasoned that working with someone remotely would be less effective than in person. I was wrong.”
Filipe M. · Virtual
“Each visit I receive a specific set of exercises to help me with my physical issues and challenges. The therapists are friendly, knowledgeable and helpful at all times.”
