An Introduction to Posture Therapy: What to Expect

correct imbalances with posture therapy

Introduction

Let's face it – we've all experienced moments where we catch ourselves slouching at our desks or hunching over our smartphones like modern-day Quasimodos. In our fast-paced, tech-driven world, coupled with long commutes, sedentary lifestyles, and a lack of movement, posture-related issues have become all too familiar. But fear not, for posture therapy is here to save the day, and your spine!

Posture therapy is all about aligning your body and optimizing the way you move, leading to many benefits. Think of reduced pain, increased energy, better breathing, and improved appearance to help you walk and hold yourself more confidently.

Good posture is essential for a healthy and active life, yet many of us struggle with poor postures leading to various musculoskeletal issues. That's where postural therapy comes in! Whole-body approaches like ours at Activ8 Posture are designed to correct imbalances and misalignments, retraining muscles to move your joints properly and restore strength, flexibility, body awareness, and, most importantly, good posture.

What is Posture Therapy? Striking the Perfect Balance

movement coaching session

In a world where we're constantly hunched over our smartphones, computers, and iPads, it's no surprise that our posture suffers. Postural therapy fills the gap where symptom-focused treatments fail to straighten things out, or workouts keep running into breakdowns in the body.

Activ8 Posture therapy is a type of treatment that focuses on correcting poor posture habits and improving whole-body alignment. Combining professional expertise and proven techniques, it involves the application of exercises, stretches, and movement coaching techniques designed to strengthen the muscles that support good posture and improve strength, flexibility, and range of motion. Our postural therapy helps assorted conditions, including back pain, neck pain, arthritis, headaches, and digestive and circulation issues. By improving posture, you can reduce pain and discomfort, improve your all-around health and wellness, and prevent future injuries.

What sets postural therapy apart from other treatments, like physical therapy, chiropractic, or personal training, is its focus on holistically addressing the root cause of postural and pain issues. By identifying and correcting muscular imbalances and weaknesses, posture therapy returns your body to its natural, harmonious, and anti-fragile state. This means long-lasting results and a stronger foundation for optimizing your body's health.

In a nutshell, posture therapy is your trusty go-to solution, blending caring support with professional know-how to help you overcome bad posture and move efficiently. Having a posture therapist in your corner to help you tackle musculoskeletal issues as they arise or prevent them and help keep your body ready for whatever you throw at it is extremely valuable. Cathryn Jakobsen Ramin called them “back whisperers” in her book Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry and Getting on the Road to Recovery.

Stand Tall, Feel Great: Why Good Posture Matters

Imagine yourself walking down the street with swagger in your step, shoulders back, head held high, and radiating an aura of confidence that turns heads. Sounds fantastic, right? Well, that's just one of the many perks of having good posture! But it's not only about looking good; good posture brings a myriad of health benefits that can significantly improve your life.

Activ8 Posture transformation 2 week change

A study from San Francisco State University found that maintaining an upright posture can help reduce feelings of depression and increase energy levels (Peper & Lin, 2012). It's no wonder, as proper alignment allows for better circulation, oxygen flow, and reduced muscle fatigue, giving you that extra pep in your step.

Furthermore, good posture aids in proper breathing, giving your diaphragm and lungs the space they need to function optimally. In terms of appearance, standing tall can enhance your presence and self-esteem.

On the flip side, when you slouch throughout your daily activities, it leads to some not-so-fun consequences. Poor posture results in chronic pain, assorted soft tissue injuries, and reduced stability and mobility. And that's where postural therapy guides you back on track and helps you avoid injuries and pain.

By helping you identify and correct bad posture habits, Activ8 Posture therapy sets you on the path to better alignment and a healthier lifestyle. And you may be surprised at how quickly you can say goodbye to those pesky posture-related woes and enjoy a world of good posture – where you can stand tall, breathe easy, and look fabulous!

Balancing Act: The Fundamental Principles of Posture Therapy

Posture therapy balance

Imagine your body as a finely tuned orchestra, where each muscle works in harmony to produce the most beautiful symphony – that's the essence of good posture. But the whole performance suffers when some instruments (or muscles) start playing out of tune. That's where the principles of posture therapy come in to get your body's orchestra back on track.

Muscle Imbalances: The Sneaky Culprit of Poor Posture

At the core of posture therapy lies the concept of muscle imbalances. When muscles become too tight, too loose, or too weak, they pull your body out of alignment, leading to poor posture. Whether it's from sitting too much, repeated patterns of using your body, or a past injury, muscle imbalances can sneak up on you and wreak havoc on your posture. With Activ8 Posture, your exercise therapist zeroes in on these imbalances to guide you in setting things straight.

It's a Holistic Affair: Addressing the Body as a Whole

In the world of posture therapy, it’s all about the bigger picture. Instead of focusing on isolated problem areas, your Activ8 Posture therapist approaches the body holistically, addressing the entire system. After all, the body is interconnected, and a single imbalance sets off a chain reaction, affecting other areas of your body. Our posture therapy ensures a well-rounded, balanced recovery by treating the body as a whole. The unexpected bonus that many of our clients love sharing is correcting multiple issues beyond their initial complaint that they thought were unrelated.

Get Straight and Strengthen: Sequencing of Postural Therapy

With our posture therapy approach, proper alignment comes before placing high amounts of demand on your body. Would you put a stronger engine in a car with poor alignment? You could, of course, but it only means bigger problems. So, we strengthen your body as you become better aligned so your body can handle the demand.

Imagine getting upper trap and cervical pain from compensating with your shoulders when moving your hips. Until we straighten out your posture and the underlying problem, you will keep lifting your shoulder blades into your neck with more demand.

Proper alignment alone activates and strengthens weak muscles to provide better support and stability. Correct posture also helps tight muscles retrain to release tension and improve flexibility. By reducing and eliminating compensation patterns of poor posture, we’re resetting your nervous system so you can generate stronger, more powerful movements that won’t cause pain or injury.

In conclusion, posture therapy tackles the root cause of poor posture by addressing muscle imbalances, taking a holistic approach, and focusing on straightening before strengthening. So, let's dive deeper into the wonderful world of postural therapy and explore techniques to help you regain balance, reduce pain, and improve how you move and feel.

How to Prepare for Your Postural Therapy Session

Before coming in for a postural therapy session (or seeing us virtually), wear comfortable clothing so you can move freely. We prefer that you wear shorts or pants that can roll up so we can see your knees when doing the assessment. On top, we’d like to see your shoulders and spine as much as possible, so we suggest a sports bra or tank top for women or no shirt or tank top for men. If you’re uncomfortable with these options, we can make do with you tucking in your shirt. Also, please bring athletic shoes with some grip or, for virtual sessions, have a yoga mat for grip as needed.

Our therapy uses a few props and minimal equipment depending on which exercises we’ll include in your custom exercise program. We have everything you’ll need in the clinic for your visits, but at home, you’ll want to make sure you have the following:

  • Enough room to back away from the camera for posture photos and functional testing. We need to see your whole body.
  • Floor space to do floor exercises. Consider how tall you are and how much room you’ll need to stretch your body and arms around you.
  • Open wall space for some of the exercises as needed. We may use the wall for guidance or as a prop for some of your exercises, so please ensure you have enough open space.
  • A sturdy chair or bench. Some exercises require sitting or using a chair as a prop.
  • Good lighting so we can see your body. Ideally, put the primary light source behind your device with the camera so we don’t get too many shadows when viewing your posture and movements.

During the session, your therapist will likely ask questions about your injury history, medical intake forms, and more. Being prepared with this information makes your session more efficient and effective.

What to Expect During Your Posture Therapy Session

posture therapy assessment

With each Activ8 Posture therapy session, your therapist will take you through our 3-Step Process. This includes Discovery, Assessment, and your Custom Plan.

In the Discovery phase, you share what you are experiencing and any updates from the prior sessions. If it’s your first session, we will ask you about your history and what therapies, modalities, or remedies you’ve tried or are doing currently (usually discussed on a phone call or Zoom meeting before your first appointment). We want to know if you are experiencing any body aches and pains, movement restrictions, or have past injuries — whether or not they seem related. We also want your input on what you think may be causing the issues.

The Assessment phase includes taking posture photos to evaluate your alignment and track your progress throughout your sessions. Your posture therapist will observe how your standing posture is balanced by taking photos of all four views of your body (front, back, right, and left). Using software to place gridlines over your posture photos aids in assessing your alignment and sharing what they observe with you. To evaluate your movement quality, you will also be asked to do various functional screens or exercises to identify better where problems may come from. Again, our focus is on the whole body and not just the area of pain. It is in the interconnectedness of the body where we find root causes and can create solutions with you that are effective and sustainable.

Your Path to Pain Free & Active

Your Custom Plan includes sequences of corrective exercises that are adjusted as needed based on your progress throughout the sessions. With each session, as your feedback and input are given, and your progress is assessed, you and your therapist will determine the necessary changes in your routines. As your body realigns and strengthens, opportunities for making changes based on the additional progress present themselves. Of course, change happens at different rates for individuals depending on each unique case and condition. Your specific exercise sequences will be delivered to you to follow at home, with photos, instructions, and videos you can follow through a mobile app or email.

Your therapist may provide feedback on posture-related ergonomics, such as with desktop set-ups, to see if you are unknowingly slouching. They may also offer other health tips as needed that complement your personalized plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is good posture important?

Good posture is important for many reasons. It helps to reduce strain on the muscles and joints, which can lead to pain and discomfort. It also helps to improve breathing and circulation, which can positively impact your all-around health. Poor posture can lead to a variety of health issues, including low back pain, neck pain, headaches, and even digestive problems. By improving musculoskeletal alignment and function through postural therapy, individuals can reduce their risk of developing these issues and improve their overall quality of life.

Can you correct years of bad posture?

Yes, correcting years of bad posture with the right approach and consistency is possible. This includes incorporating exercises that strengthen the muscles supporting good posture, such as the core, spine, hips, shoulders, and upper back. It also involves being aware of your posture throughout the day and making adjustments or doing pattern-interrupting exercises to avoid slouching or hunching over. Seeking professional help from a posture therapist (like those at Activ8 Posture) can also be beneficial in correcting long-standing postural issues. You can improve your posture with time and effort for better overall health and comfort.

What is Activ8 Posture Therapy?

Activ8 Posture therapy is an evidence-based approach to treating poor posture and musculoskeletal symptoms. Our experienced therapists are trained to identify postural imbalances, correct dysfunctional movement patterns, and improve muscular strength, mobility, stability, and function. If you have been dealing with pain or discomfort related to your posture, our team of professionals can help you achieve lasting relief.

Our posture therapy includes personalized, whole-body treatment to correct muscle imbalances and boney misalignments by retraining muscles to move your body properly. We use a 3-step process to get clients started on the process of posture transformation that consists of Discovery, Assessment, and a Customized Plan.

Step 1: Discovery

While most of our clients see us for pain relief when they get started, the biggest difference between postural therapy and physical therapy is focusing on the entire body (and person) versus symptom areas alone. And to better understand what has led to and is involved in your pain symptoms, movement restrictions, or posture imbalances, we need to get to know you. Therefore, we start with a discovery call to discuss details about your current condition to understand better how we can help and what it will take.

Step 2: Assessment

During step 2 of the process, your posture therapist will assess your body for misalignments by doing a posture analysis and areas of weakness through various functional tests. By looking at your whole body, not just the painful area, we can find the musculoskeletal connections at the root of the problem. Indeed, the site of the pain is rarely the source of the problem.

Step 3: Custom Plan

Step 3 is where we work with you on your custom, individual posture therapy plan. Each person we see is unique in their history and how their body is aligned and moving. By combining your history and current assessment, we can provide personalized corrective exercises targeting the problematic spots.

By following our 3-step process of posture therapy, you will then be set up to continue on the process of pain relief and restoration of your body to its natural design and fullest potential. Your therapist may also suggest lifestyle changes or relief techniques that can be utilized outside of the session.

What is the best therapy for posture?

The best therapy for improving posture will vary depending on the individual, but some common options include physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, and a whole-body posture therapy program like Activ8 Posture, where you practice individualized corrective exercises to re-align your body and strengthen muscles. It's important to consult with any healthcare professional you're considering working with to determine the best fit and most effective treatment plan for your specific case. Additionally, incorporating ergonomic adjustments and incorporating good posture habits throughout the day can help improve posture in the long term.

What is Posture Therapy?

Posture therapy is a type of whole-body therapy that focuses on correcting postural imbalances and improving alignment in the body. The goal is to relieve pain, prevent future injuries, and enhance overall function by teaching people how to achieve proper posture through exercises, stretches, and other techniques. It can benefit those with chronic pain or conditions related to poor posture habits.

Do I need to understand my posture to get results?

Sure, understanding how your current posture is impacting your body can help know what you're focusing on. Your postural therapist will take a detailed look at your body’s postural alignment and identify any issues that are impeding movement or causing discomfort. Once they have identified those areas, they can better recommend and discuss a course of treatment tailored towards improving your posture and reducing the risk of further complications.

Sure, some of our clients aren’t as interested in seeing their photos for various reasons (and that’s okay). Your therapist will still want to evaluate your standing posture and use it as a measure of your progress. What’s great about posture is that there are different ways for you to understand it that don’t include the photos. We can tap into your kinesthetic awareness to have you feel more of what is going on in your body as well. If you’re a kinesthetic learner, it can be a lot of fun feeling your way through the process!

What is also important to understand about proper posture is that it’s not only how you stand that we are interested in when doing posture therapy sessions. The standing posture is just a part of the overall assessment that takes us to observe your functional movement patterns to uncover muscle imbalances, weaknesses, and restrictions.
