How Our Therapy Works

Step 1: Posture Photos

The first step in our process is taking posture photos of your body. This is where we’ll see the specific postural misalignments that are at the root cause of the pain symptoms or decreased body performance you are experiencing. These misalignments are caused by compensating muscles- muscles that are being overused to work around dysfunctional muscles. Dysfunctional muscles are ones that are not performing the job the body needs them to do.

This is our client Nancy, who came to us with back pain. Analyzing her posture photos, we found her back pain was due to her upper body being offset (lean) to her right, causing the lower back to be unevenly loaded. This led to more stress being put on the right side of the back, causing pain.

Using specific functional tests, we found the root cause of her right lower back pain was Nancy’s left hip flexor muscles being dysfunctional (i.e., underactive and weak). To compensate for this, her upper body shifted to the right to avoid use of the weak left hip and, in the process, overused the right side of her body. Her right lower back complained but was not the root cause, only the symptom.

Step 2: Functional Tests

Once we’ve analyzed your posture photos with you, we’ll do functional tests (movement tests) to figure out which muscles and movement patterns are dysfunctional and how your body is compensating. The results of your posture analysis, functional tests, and your unique condition guide the path of how we’ll address the muscle imbalances to help you regain optimal performance.

Step 3: Activ8 Daily Exercises

Based on our findings from the posture photos and functional tests, we’ll prescribe a sequence of exercises custom-tailored to your body. These exercises are simple, do not require any fancy equipment, and can be done at home. By doing your specific set of exercises consistently (daily is best), you will realign your body through muscle re-patterning to reduce pain symptoms and optimize body performance.

To eliminate her back pain, we prescribed Nancy exercises to activate and strengthen her left hip flexor muscle. As this happened, her body started to “trust” her left hip again and didn’t need to compensate to the right any longer. By restoring the right-left balance of her hips and body, the stress on her lower back was relieved along with the pain. Note: These photos were taken during the same session, showing how fast our bodies can change when the root cause is addressed effectively.
